Everything you need to know to get started with Isomaps — on web and mobile.
Use your mouse or finger to drag the map. Scroll or pinch to zoom. On desktop, hold Ctrl and drag to rotate and tilt the map.
Click the layers icon to switch between different map styles: topographic, road map, satellite, and more. Each layer is optimized for a different use case.
Toggle the 3D button to see the terrain in relief. Tilt the map to get an immersive view of the mountains and valleys. Great for planning hikes and visualizing elevation.
Use the search bar to find a place by name. Start typing and suggestions will appear after 3 characters. Select a result to fly to that location.
Some layers include a legend explaining the colors and symbols used. When available, the legend appears as a draggable overlay on the map.
A trace is a GPS track representing a hike, trail run, bike ride, or any outdoor activity. Each trace includes the route geometry, elevation data, distance, and optional photos and descriptions.
You can create a trace by importing a GPX file, or by drawing a route directly on the map. The system automatically calculates distance, elevation gain/loss, and estimated duration.
Each trace is associated with an activity type: Hiking, Trail Running, Mountain Biking, Ski Touring, Snowshoeing, and more. This helps organize and filter your traces.
Traces can be set to three visibility levels:
Each trace displays an elevation profile showing the altitude along the route. Hover over the profile to see the corresponding point on the map.
You can add photos and videos to your traces to document your adventures. Photos can be viewed in a gallery and are geolocated when GPS data is available.
Drag and drop a .gpx file onto the map, or use the import button. Isomaps will automatically extract the route, elevation data, and waypoints. You can import GPX files from popular apps like Strava, Garmin Connect, AllTrails, and others.
You can export any of your traces as a GPX file to use in your GPS device or other apps. The export includes the full route geometry and elevation data.
Organize your traces into folders to keep things tidy. Folders are perfect for grouping traces by region, trip, or activity type.
Go to "My Folders" in the dashboard and click "New Folder". Give it a name and optionally a description. You can also set the folder visibility (private, friends, or public).
Open a trace and use the "Add to folder" option to organize it. A trace can belong to multiple folders.
You can generate a share link for any folder. Anyone with the link can view the folder and all its traces on the map — no account required.
Send a friend invitation by email or by searching for a user. Once accepted, you become friends and automatically follow each other.
Friends is a mutual connection — both of you can see each other's activities (if set to "Friends" visibility). Following is automatic when you become friends, and lets you see their public and friends-only activities in your feed.
Your activity feed shows traces and activities from people you follow. You can filter the feed to show only friends or all followed users.
Create groups to organize your friends (e.g. "Family", "Hiking club"). Groups help you manage who sees your activities and share content with specific people.
Like your friends' traces and activities to show appreciation. You can see who liked your traces in the detail view.
Chat with your friends directly on Isomaps. Conversations are private and end-to-end between participants.
Go to the Messages section and create a new conversation. You can chat one-on-one or create group conversations with multiple friends.
Generate a unique share link for any trace, activity, or folder. Anyone with the link can view the content on the map without needing an account.
When sharing, you can choose which map layer the recipient will see (road map or topographic). This is saved with the share link.
Traces set to "Public" are visible to everyone and appear in the explore section. They are also indexed by search engines, allowing others to discover your routes.
Set your public display name and avatar in your account settings. Your public name is what other users see — your private account name and email are never shared.
Control your default visibility for new activities, manage who can follow you, and configure notification preferences (email, push).

Isomaps supports standard GPX 1.0 and 1.1 files, including those exported from Strava, Garmin, Suunto, Komoot, AllTrails, and other popular apps.
You can browse the map and view public traces without an account. To save traces, add friends, or use the messaging system, you need a free account.
