Upper Bavaria (Oberbayern) covers 17,530 km² of the Bavarian Alps, plus pre-Alpine foothills, the elevated plateau between Munich and the summits, and the great lakes (Chiemsee, Tegernsee, Königssee). The Zugspitze (2,962 m), Germany's highest peak, and the iconic Watzmann massif (2,713 m) dominate the landscape. Three national (Berchtesgaden) and natural (Karwendel, Ammergebirge) parks protect the most spectacular areas.
Munich, the Bavarian capital, is the ideal base: direct trains to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1h20), Berchtesgaden (3h), and the Bavarian Alps overall. The cable car and DAV refuge network is exceptional.
Best season: May to October for the valleys and foothills, mid-June to mid-October for the high mountains. Early snowfalls can surprise as early as September above 2,000 m. Always check the Lawinenwarndienst (avalanche service) and the DAV conditions report before heading high.
