Good to know

The corps de garde at Pointe des Guettes (or de la Guette), according to plans drafted in 1744 by M° Dubreuil Dumarchais (AD 35, C 1146), consisted of two parts: a barracks room for 20 soldiers (living quarters and powder magazine), with a fireplace, and featuring a vaulted roof and an oblique door. The building on the left is the adjacent storehouse, built in 1795, intended to store weapons, ammunition, food and various equipment (which does not appear to have been roofed). The firing position of the two 12-pound cannons can still be seen downslope from the buildings on a small platform protected by a modest earthen rampart. At Pointe des Guettes (or de la Guette), the last of the three corps de garde in the municipality (there were two others at Pointe des Eaux and Cap Tanguy) was renovated in 1990, thanks to the support of the Pléneuf-Val-André municipality, the Friends of the Corps de Garde association and a grant from the General Council. The establishment of the "guettes", batteries and corps de garde along the coast of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, at Cap d'Erquy, Château Tanguy, Dahouët, Cotentin, Hillion and Pointe du Roselier, was ordered by King Louis XV to deter the landing of English warships, which often approached the coast. The Dahouët guette was built around 1745. Otherwise, it can serve as a shelter but there are absolutely no walls, only a roof and no door.
