From the hamlet of Longueville (commune of Saint-Baudille-et-Pipet, near Mens) follow the well-marked (yellow) and maintained trail, which crosses many other trails and tracks. It is possible to take the Hirondelle trail, which also comes from Longueville but further north; it is a bit steeper, with sections that may unsettle the most sensitive. **Winter** : most slopes in this area are highly avalanche-prone, even the main access path can be dangerous in its upper section.
Two buildings: the first, the westernmost, is always closed - it is actually used by shepherds and ONF agents. The other refuge was renovated from early May 2016 and reopened in July 2016 - see comments. It has two levels: a ground floor with a table, benches, and a state-of-the-art stove. An upper floor for sleeping, with mattresses. The floor is entirely covered with thick moss. Excellent insulation. Special care was taken during renovation, and a ventilation duct (which can be closed with a sliding shutter) was installed on the north gable. It is likely that the heat from the stove (in addition to that from the sleepers) will quickly make the sleeping area comfortable, even in winter, provided you do not go without a sleeping bag. A few blankets are available. The refuge is very well insulated and the stove does not need to be fed much to easily reach over 20°C on the upper floor. A good spring flows nearby. The water is icy, even now (August 2016). Dry toilets are accessible via a path behind the refuge. Firewood is not nearby...since the forest ends 100 m below in elevation.
