Via Villard Heyssier: Take the gorges of Saint Pierre, currently closed (it still passes through!). Go through the Congerman cabin, then cross the Col de l'Orgeat and descend to the refuge. (4 to 5h) Via Ondre: Take the trail that climbs to the Col de l'Orgeat. The refuge is 100 m of elevation before the pass.
Shepherd's cabin completely open in winter when the shepherd is absent. A stove and real mattresses, lit by solar panel and battery, large table, benches, nothing is missing! Outdoor table and benches, and a stone barbecue area. There is a large rainwater tank, and a tap with a sink inside (but likely turned off in winter). Water point less than 100 m away, in the valley, below the cabin. And plenty of wood available all around!
