The easiest way: a paved road ascends from Saint-Martin-Vésubie over 9 km (road closed from November to April). Elevation gain 1000 m. It is possible to hike up to Boréon, then follow the GR52 eastwards, passing the Pas (col) des Ladres before descending to the Madone de Fenestre. TAM bus line 730 from Nice to Saint-Martin-de-Vésubie.
The somewhat misleading name (Gîte-refuge) is due to the building's location, surrounded by other structures that make up the Madone de Fenestre sanctuary, a pilgrimage site. Access by car and bus is possible during the high season. In winter, when the road is closed, there are 20 available beds. Further details can be found on the CAF Nice-Mercantour website. Classic starting point for routes such as Saint-Robert or Gélas.
