On the edge of GR30 and GR 41 trails, 200 m south of the marker indicating the viewpoint over Lake Pavin. In winter, from Lake Pavin (parking along D978), take the forest road to the left just before reaching the lake or start the lake loop on the right and climb via the marked snowshoe trail. Note that the refuge is located in the cross-country ski trail area and is therefore generally off-limits to pedestrians. In summer, the forest road from Lake Pavin to Besse passes nearby.
The term 'refuge' is a bit of an exaggeration for this emergency shelter set up in the cross-country ski trail maintenance building. It has 6 chairs, a public trash bin and that's all. Clean and functional.
