The summer refuge is not accessible in winter due to snowdrifts blocking the building’s entrance. For the safety of people and property, a second chalet, located 80 m lower at 2260 m altitude, was set up in 2016 and has been accessible since that winter (2016/2017) to shelter ski or snowshoe hikers. In winter, the eastern part of the fairly steep valley becomes a major and dangerous avalanche couloir !!
