Normal access from Spain (you don't get there by accident!): from Ochagavìa (50km east of Pamplona), a tiny forest road of 23km will take you to the hamlet of Irati. Continue along the forest track (no cars allowed) for 1.5km northwards (following the right bank of the rio Irati). The cabin is below the forest track, by the rio Irati. From France, it's a bit trickier: from St Jean Pied de Port, head towards the Iraty ski resort as far as Iratiko Etchola lake, continue towards the Pedro chalet, which you pass, until the end of the tarmac road (stay on the right bank of the stream). Just before the ford, leave the car and continue along a nice track for 500m to the border. Cross the border via the smugglers' path (now renamed GRT9): a few dozen metres of very steep ground among rocks and unstable earth in the forest. Descend about ten metres in altitude (follow the GR waymarking). You will then reach the Spanish end of a logging track which will take you, after 3km still on the right bank of the stream, to the cabin.
This refuge is intended to accommodate FOR ONE NIGHT all people who are making a crossing on foot or by mountain bike and have reached Iraty without a motor vehicle. The cabin belongs to the general assembly of the Salazar valley and is freely accessible and free of charge, with no booking, reception or staff. Warning: the area is quite touristy, the region pays particular attention to it and it is not impossible for wardens to carry out patrols.
