The oldest mountain hut in France, as it has served this purpose since the 14th century! Who can top that? The "Domerie" of Aubrac, founded in the 11th century, was a shelter located on inhospitable heights to offer refuge to pilgrims on the Way of St James and any traveler facing dangers from the climate, bandits, wolves, etc. Managed by a "dom", equivalent to an abbot, the fortified monastery-shelter (the tower occupies one corner of the old fortified enclosure) was run by a community of Augustinian monks and defended by armed knights. The name "des Anglais" (of the English) comes from the concerns of the time, which added to the existing risks the threat of an armed contingent of English soldiers, known for their beer breath, roaming through our beautiful country...
