Access

The quickest route: via the road to the Col de la Bataille, stop at the Resistance monument in a bend, where there is a parking area. It is then signposted, 20 minutes. Caution: the passage under the Roc de Toulau, from the Col de la Bataille to the plateau, is not recommended due to the risk of falling rocks/avalanches. In winter, the Col de la Bataille is closed quite early, so it is better to come via Font d'Urle (to the east), along the plateau ridges and the Pas de l'Infernet. There is a less obvious passage when you are on the Ambel plateau to find your way; a good rule is then to follow the edge of the forest, which leads to the path to the refuge.

Good to know

A large stone building with 3 floors: - the main room with a stove (the chimney has been removed), 3 fairly large tables and a 5-place sleeping bench. - a ladder leads upstairs, arranged with 3 sleeping benches. - a large room below with a double-leaf door without insulation, containing a picnic table and some firewood in reserve. There is no heating in this large room. Summer 2013: the windows on the first and second floors (under the roof) and the front door were replaced with double glazing that seals well. Dry toilets were also installed. A fitted and abundant fountain is located 10 m from the entrance. A stock of logs, which can be substantial, is located on the right side in the lower slope, another at the bottom next to the entrance of the large room, under cover, and sometimes in the large room itself. The general condition is very good. A broom, a shovel, a saw and a fire extinguisher are fixed to the wall. It is very close to the Tubanet and Gardiol refuges, but better located. Mobile network: very weak, intermittent (Orange). A few rules of use: only one night per person, bivouacking is only allowed near the refuge, fires are strictly prohibited, dogs are not allowed, water is not monitored, take away your waste and respect nearby herds.
