The ascent from La Roche-sur-Foron is easy and takes about 1h30 (via Cheneviers, Mont Piton, or Chesnet): a track leads up to the nearby restaurant located about 300m below the Abri de Balme. The approach via ChampLaitier / Col de l'Ebat is more difficult: it involves a tricky section of about [->4868] (with a cable as the name suggests), especially on the descent. Do not confuse the restaurant des Chalets de Balme (also called "Le Chamois", located a few hundred meters below) which only offers catering and no accommodation with the Abri de Balme in question here.
The "guarded" part of this hut is permanently closed. This hut has a large terrace with a big table and only a very small room, which could be described as an entrance lobby, is open. Therefore, it is only a shelter, with no comfort. This small room, located on the left side of the chalet, provides access to the first-floor terrace via a wooden staircase and to a small space that can accommodate at most two people. There is one very worn-out mattress in this upper area. There is also a space accessible from the back of the chalet via a ladder leading under the roof: a simple wooden floor that can also serve as a makeshift shelter. The insulation is very poor, so bring a very good sleeping bag and warm clothes in case of an emergency. A small spring flows near the hut. The flow is often quite low and irregular. The presence of wood around the hut is of no use since there is no stove anyway... (and besides, they are fir trees...)
