Access is from France, from Gavarnie via the Espuguettes and the Hourquette d'Alans; from Gèdre and Héas, via the Gloriettes dam and the cirque d'Estaubé. You must then climb the Tuquerouye couloir, 300 m of snow (or scree in summer) with a steep gradient, requiring the use of crampons and good technique.
The oldest and highest refuge in the Pyrenees. Built with an ogival vault in 1890 and expanded in 1927 by adding a second identical building. It was renovated in 1999 (roof redone in 2005). 2 large tables with benches (+ 2 additional benches), stove, saw, broom in the dining area. Dormitory for 12 people with mattresses and blankets. Wood is stored under the bunks. No running water: descend to the icy lake (15min). Emergency radio. Night stay: 10€ / person. (2026)
