In summer, the most common access is via the Maurienne valley, Modane, Valfréjus. From Valfréjus, reach the Lavoir parking area via a drivable road. Then, 900m of elevation gain and 2h30 of walking. Pass the Col de la Vallée Etroite, the refuge is 20min of walking west of it. Access to the refuge can also be done by walking through the Vallée Etroite, the Clarée valley (Névache), Valmeinier (Maurienne valley). In winter, you can also reach the refuge via the different valleys (Maurienne, Clarée, Etroite). You must check snow and weather conditions beforehand. From Valfréjus, the road leading to the Lavoir parking area is snow-covered and is a ski track. You can ascend this road on snowshoes or by ski touring (beware of skiers coming down!). Then follow the summer route marked on the IGN map (IGN TOP 25 - NEVACHE MONT THABOR – 3535 OT).
To book online at the Thabor refuge or get information about the Thabor area: www.refugesclareethabor.com. Outside the guarded period, the refuge remains open (24 places). You will find gas, crockery (pots, plates, bowls), wood, blankets. Dry toilets are located inside the refuge. Payment for the overnight stay is made in the box inside the refuge (12€ per night for 2025 (8€ for FFCAM members). The stove works particularly well. There are 3 saws + 1 axe. Do not rely too much on gas in winter (often exhausted). In winter, there is no water, the source is frozen. You must melt snow or fetch water from the lake, 5min of walking above the refuge. GSM reception: Orange OK, otherwise sufficient signal 50m north of the refuge, on a small grassy hill.
