From the Valante refuge, descend into the Valante valley and, at Granges Soulières, look east for a wooden signpost pointing to the Bérardo bivouac (9 places). The trail leading up to [->4270] is well-marked and easy to follow until the bivouac, and it climbs constantly in a rather steep manner. From Berardo to Forciolline, the path becomes much more rugged, with scree slopes more or less stabilized; the markings change to a more discreet yellow, seeking the best route through a fairly flat suspended valley after crossing the first scree dome, passing near more or less dried-up pools. The other trail that goes directly up the Forciolline valley is a more demanding path, very rocky, equipped in several sections with chains or other aids to facilitate passage, navigating the best route through the rocky chaos.
The new Forciolline bivouac is very comfortable, with mattresses and blankets for 12/14 people, or more if you squeeze in. WARNING: often crowded, very busy, and occupied for the ascent of Mont Viso. Located by the Forciolline lake. In a stunning mineral setting...! Inaugurated in August 2004. A technical sheet on the construction and amenities is available on this page, along with a series of photos on that one.
