The most pleasant, albeit long, route is from Vent (1900 m), possibly stopping at the Martin Busch Hut (Samoar), which must be quite large with its 140 beds. The ascent is steady and gradual, with fine views of the surrounding mountains. Allow about 2h30/3 h for the first section, then another 2 h to reach the Similaun Hut. From Vent, allow about 6 h without rushing. If coming from Italy, start at 1800 m, at a parking area just above Vernagt and its lake (there used to be a small cable car serving the hut, which when operational was used to transport backpacks up to the hut...!) and head straight north up a long, steep valley, well exposed to the south, where usually not a drop of water flows among the scree in mid-summer: do not leave your water bottle in your pack if you had it taken up by the cable car! This route is shorter in distance but far less pleasant... this is the one I took. Allow 4h/4h30 h, possibly less if you no longer have a pack.
Beds are available in dormitories (30 places) or small rooms (40 places). The main outing from this hut is the Similaun, easy and safe provided you do not stray too far north onto the glacier in fog. Other peaks include Finailspitze, Marzell and Hintere Schwärze, in order of increasing difficulty (crevasses!). The area is ideal for relaxing, of course, and it is one of the easier points to cross on either side of the border range if you are doing a long circuit of the massif.
