Access

The access route coincides with that of Col Pinter, a mandatory stage on the VN de la Tête Grise, between Val d'Ayas and Valle di Gressoney. I only know the Ayas side and you start from the village of Champoluc. Near the church, a small road (signpost), quickly followed by a trail heading ENE along the right bank of the Cunéaz stream towards the Chalet de France, then the Cunéaz alpine pasture (2032 m.). Around 2300 m, you cross the stream and approach via a narrow, steeper valley the debris slopes (late snowfields) leading to Col Pinter. From there, you head NNE on a faint trail slightly on the left flank of the ridge up to the flattened summit of Mt Pinter, north of which a small plateau leads to the shelter. Allow about 5 hours.

Good to know

This follows the Italian tradition of metal-clad full-circle shelters, but with double or triple the usual capacity. Tête Grise (3314 m, the rock is in stacked plates or gullied slopes, generally rotten but without technical difficulties: best done early) is one of the most visited viewpoints in the area for its views and sunrises...hence the larger size. Illustrations can be seen on this page and others on this site. -No water nearby (snowfields or runoff water on the slopes) -Mattresses and blankets on bunk beds -Very good insulation -Tables, benches.
