In the high combe of Oren. You must go up the entire Valpelline, to the Place Moulin dam. A two-part parking area has been set up near the crest (refreshment stand nearby... welcome on the way down!). A wide paved service road (a variant marked in yellow as n° 9 almost immediately climbs on the left and runs along the left bank higher than the path bordering the lake - this variant is a bit too much of a rollercoaster...) runs along the lake and you follow it to the end. After crossing a bridge over the Oren stream, you arrive near a votive chapel, where the path suddenly becomes paved. Soon you come across a sign indicating trail n°8, which will climb the Oren valley on the left after crossing the stream again. You are therefore on the right bank and it is only around 2100 m, after joining trail n°9, that a footbridge allows you to cross to the left bank and continue to the end. A series of switchbacks around 2400 m is followed by a passage very close to the stream, beyond which a large rock bears an arrow indicating the sharp turn to the right. You will climb steeply in switchbacks a 200 m high promontory (some facilities: metal steps + handrail chain) to finally reach a vast alluvial plain from where you can see the refuge on the left. Allow 4h/4h30 from the parking area. SAVDA buses serve Bionaz from Aosta.
This refuge dates from 1968 and has been renovated and expanded several times. Showers and toilets are in a small annex building. 24 places in the winter refuge, always open (slightly below the main refuge). Mobile phones do not have reception (you must go up to Col Collon where Swisscom network is available), but the refuge is equipped with a radio-telephone set available upon request to the keeper, for a fee. Languages spoken: French, English, German, Italian, Spanish.
