Access

Starting from Bourg-St-Pierre, via the Cordonna alpine pasture (accessible by car), a good trail (signposted from Bourg-St-Pierre, then marked) leads to the Châlet d'Amont (2197 m.). From there, the trail heads southeast in a gentle ascent and reaches a small rocky outcrop after about 600 m, which it climbs via a chimney-like gully (chains as handrails anchored in the rock for safety). It passes near the point marked 2352.5. The trail continues to join the cattle trail. Caution! This option seems to have been abandoned in favor of the detour via the cow trail, which runs further east from the Châlet d'Amont, but I have not tested it...: chains are likely not present there!. Finally, a bend to the northeast, successive curves through scree and over a rocky ridge where the hut can already be seen from the turn. Allow 4h30 from Cordonna.

Good to know

Excellent location with breathtaking views of the border chain and especially the Mont Vélan directly opposite. Classic base for routes on the southern slope of the Grand Combin. Whether taking the route via Col du Meitin and Combin de Valsorey (three successive rocky shoulders - rockfall), or routes along the southern wall (Sonadon or Plateau du Couloir), allow a minimum of 7 hours for the ascent in good conditions and 4 hours for the descent. Due to the south-facing exposure, set out no later than 2 AM from the hut and avoid the hot hours on the slopes (avalanches, falling rocks, etc.). If the upper slopes of the Meitin glacier are bare and icy, consider the rocky bars to the east as you ascend: a slip would be unforgiving. It is essential to check conditions beforehand. The hut keeper’s website dedicated to the Cabane de Valsorey can be consulted.
