In the Val d'Ollomont, north of Valpelline-bourg. SVAP buses run a service between Aosta and Glassier, via Valpelline and Ollomont (timetables on this page). This adds 1h30 to reach Glacier P. From there, follow the track heading towards By (route No. 4, marked with yellow discs), then turn left after crossing the stream. Switchbacks lead to the crest of a wooded and grassy slope, where the path turns into a trail. At the Farinet alpine pasture (2009 m), leave the Durand Window trail to the right and head towards By. After crossing more alpine pastures and grassy slopes, you reach a rocky promontory where the route is equipped with cables as handrails. The last twenty metres lead to the terrace where the hut stands. From Glacier (1549 m), allow 4h30 of good pace. At least 6h from Ollomont (1366 m). The approach is on the south side. There is water but also herds with flies and horseflies: set off early!
The old wooden cabin (20 places, by pushing the furniture!) has been enlarged and supplemented by a masonry building, it was about time... In winter, 15 places remain available on wooden bunks with mattresses and blankets. Information is available on the website of the Ollomont Municipality. This is the starting point for ascents from Italy to the Grand Combin or, more modestly, to the Grande Tête de By or Mont Avril, among others. Caution: the snowfields and gullies that were present thirty years ago now provide abundant loose rocks.
