Warning: the ascent to the J-A Carrel hut is a high mountain route rated AD (in good conditions) !!! It is assumed that you will start from Breuil, heading north towards Col du Lion (Colle del Leone). Up to the Croix de Carrel, marked trail no. 13; then, red paint marks here and there.
This cabin, built at the foot of the Grande Tour, completely replaces the old hut (1905), also made of wood, Luigi-Amedeo di Savoia, which was located a few meters higher and was dismantled and brought down to Breuil as a historical monument. This shelter, where a guide periodically goes for surveillance missions (the issue of its staffing is unclear: contact the Breuil guides!), has sleeping platforms with mattresses and blankets, dishes, first aid kit, tables, benches. No heating. Presumably (a stove was available in the past: also check with the Bureau des Guides) you must bring your own fuel and obviously your own food, and especially WATER !!!. Given its location on the Italian Via Normale, summer overcrowding is to be feared, despite the access but because of the Matterhorn. It is clear that tourists do not climb to Carrel.
