From the Schönbielhütte, towards the base of the west face of the Matterhorn.
WARNING: SHELTER DESTROYED BY AVALANCHE!!! This fairly recent metal structure, intended to ease congestion at the Schönbielhütte or Hörnlihütte for those heading towards the Zmuttgrat or the north or west faces, was built on the initiative of the Zermatt Guides Society, almost at the base of the large diagonal couloir cutting across the west face of the Matterhorn...a genuine avalanche funnel. You can get an idea of the current terrain by consulting aerial views. The hut has been rebuilt and inaugurated in October 2022. There is now a brand-new hut with 8 beds. It is not guarded but you must still book your place, pay (65 CHF without reciprocity discount!!) and collect the key in Zermatt (50 CHF deposit). Gas stove, water to be treated.
