The main task is to reach the Pas de Lona: from Evolène, a trail ascends northwest towards the Volovron alpine pastures, bypasses the lower foothills of the Sasseneire and approaches the Grand Torrent valley to climb northeast along the left bank to Plan Levri (2490 m), where the trail from St-Martin-Eison is rejoined. Successive switchbacks then lead to the Pas de Lona (2788 m), a pass from which you turn left (north) along a rocky ridge leading to the stony terrace where the hut is built. You can also start from the hamlet of Eison (St-Martin) via the alpine roads of l'A Vieille, but their accessibility must be verified on site. The Pas de Lona can also be reached from Grimentz (Val d'Anniviers) in roughly the same time.
A fairly large, recent hut (1998) built in an open and superb location offering views of the high mountains near Val d'Hérens (Arolla and Ferpècle valleys) as well as much of the Upper Valais. For rates and opening periods, see the website. Ridge and inter-valley hikes are possible in almost all directions (see also the Lona lakes, a possible crossing at [->1947]).
