The classic route starts from Saas-Fee and is well marked from the village (Note: no car traffic allowed – as in Zermatt – parking is mandatory in one of the paid parking lots just downstream of Saas). The trail winds through alpine pastures first, then scree slopes and finally rocky steps on the sides of a steep valley (sometimes high steps...). This means it is more tiring uphill (due to altitude) than downhill. Guidebooks mention 3h30 or 4h...these are pranksters writing for Profit or Edlinger. With your pack, count on 5 hours easily. A way to shorten the hike (1h30 less) would be to take the Hannigalp cable car (2350 m) from Saas, then head west to rejoin the previous route at 2450 m: I haven’t tested it, so I can’t say anything about it....
