Access

A little above Schalijoch (3750 m), in the first rocks of the SSW ridge of the Weisshorn. One of the most remote and inaccessible places in the Pennine Alps, yet breathtaking...! As I have not climbed it myself, I provide directions based on the surrounding context and sources (SAC) - from Randa, via the Schaligletscher, an expedition taking 8 to 10 hours, difficulty AD (excluding stops). - from [->2210], via the upper part of the Schaligletscher, about 6 hours, same level. - from [->2268], approximately 5-6 hours depending on conditions (also AD). Schalijoch is not actually used as a passage but as access to the start of the Schaligrat of the Weisshorn, among others. In summary, ALL access routes (excluding the Arpitettaz side) are long, exposed to seracs, crevasses, rockfalls and avalanches.

Good to know

Metal construction. No water nearby (snow or ice). Bunk with mattress and blanket. Adequate insulation but its altitude and location expose it to extreme temperature swings between very hot and freezing: no heating! A page about this site. Gas refills available. Radio present for emergency alerts.
