By car, starting from Usillon, just after exiting Nant Sec, turn right off the road leading up to Plateau des Glières and take the direction of La Verrerie / les Molliets via a narrow road that later becomes a path. Park at the parking area at 805m altitude, at the Molliets footbridge, which is the trailhead. Caution: the trail crosses avalanche corridors and has a few slightly exposed sections requiring vigilance, especially if the path is wet. Rockfall is also possible, so be careful.
The new Cabane des Pics Noirs. A wooden cabin rebuilt by a private individual between September 2014 and April 2015 at the exact location of the former cabin that was destroyed. Most of the materials used come from the old cabin. Surface area of about 12m2 (approximately 4m x 3m), with one window and a small ventilation shutter. Wooden floor, slightly sloped tin roof (insulated with polystyrene panels), one table, 2 benches, and 2 stools. One plastic chair. A foldable sleeping platform (note: the wooden legs are fragile) allows one person to lie down. One broom (and a broken broom handle), a small shovel, and a small brush. 5 basic foam mattresses, 1cm thick (including 2 new ones placed in July 2015). A guestbook in a small wooden box with a pencil and a pen. 2 coat hooks (one outside), 2 metal hangers, one bowl, and 2 plates. No stove, no heating. It is strongly advised to minimize the use of fire, even outside, as the cabin is located deep in the forest. There is an outdoor table and bench, one bench attached to the cabin, and a ladder. A small shed for storing wood. A rope bed is also set up next to the cabin. There is a temporary water source (water not guaranteed) about 5 minutes from the cabin.
