The usual access is from the Mauvoisin dam, located at the end of the Val de Bagnes. During the previous visit (in summer), the tarmac road ended at the dam crest. An unpaved construction and alpine road continued along the left bank of Lake Mauvoisin. Traffic for cars was regulated by odd/even hours, allowing either ascent or descent alternately. From the dam, the road climbs through a one-kilometre tunnel cut into bare, dripping rock, with no lighting. The road surface is sometimes icy. At the tunnel exit, the narrow natural-soil track, although passable, rarely allows vehicles to pass each other, and there is no protection on the lake side. After about 6 km, you reach a flat area upstream of the lake where vehicles are left (altitude approx. 2000 m). From there, a well-marked track leads to the hut in half an hour, set in the middle of alpine pastures. It is advised to leave the car near the dam and walk the 4-hour approach.
Beautiful stone-built hut. Life there is marked not only by the activity of mountaineers and the guardian, but also by that of the large herd of fat brown cows grazing peacefully around. Each cow wears a large bell that rings until 10 PM (in August, summer time). The deaf may ignore this, as may those who enjoy late-night gatherings. Base for classic ascents such as Ruinette, Mont Gelé, Portons, the frontier chain bordering the Otemma glacier, etc. Or to split the approach length to Vignettes, Aiguillette, Col Collon, etc. Useful information is available on the information website or on that of the Geneva section of the Swiss Alpine Club. In winter: 7 places with blankets and pillows, dry toilets inside, a wood stove for heating, no cooking equipment. Night rate 2025: 48.5 CHF per person (including tourist tax).
