Access

The road leading to the bottom of the Val d'Hérémence ends after about fifteen hairpin bends right next to the Dix dam, at the place called "Le Chargeur". From there, two options to reach the top of the dam (almost 300 m high...): the cable car, if it is operating (I have not tested it...), or the kind of 4x4 track (with an accompanying path) itself winding up the slope. In any case, you are in Switzerland: all the necessary signs are in place and you will not get lost. To be honest, this climb along the concrete wall is grim. Once past the dam, the paved track heads south, first through a series of tunnels, then in the open air, along the left bank of the lake. There is gentle ascent and descent over 7 km before reaching the southwest corner of the lake, where the track turns into a path and starts climbing in earnest. About 3 km remain, with a 600 m elevation gain. Attention! It seems the route has been modified: from there, head for the depression west of Tête Noire, then descend slightly to the hut. The former route was as follows: you gradually approach the left bank of the Cheilon glacier (actually skirting its moraine or the snow covering its edges) at about 2800 m, while you have to go around a large rocky promontory on its left: Tête Noire. Then a second ridge, where the hut is located, is approached by turning westwards. Allow about 4 to 4.5 hours from Le Chargeur, excluding stops.
