The hut is shown on the Swisstopo 1:25000 map sheet 1309 "Simplon", roughly in the extension of the ESE ridge of Mattwaldhorn, about 2000 m as the crow flies from it, slightly on the southern flank of the ridge, about 300 m before reaching the névés connecting the Gamsergletscher to the Mattwaldgletscher. From Saas-Balen, via Matt and Siwibode, the route involves crossing the Mattwaldbach quite high up (around 2400 m), then ascending the right bank through scree far upstream and practically along the lower edge of the ESE ridge of Mattwaldhorn. This somewhat surreal place long remained unmarked on maps... It is assumed that its construction was motivated by the scarcity of shelters in the area, apart from the [->2373] (which should not be confused with this one!). Furthermore, the variety of its names warranted clarification, so as not to mislead the well-meaning mountaineer who will endure six or seven hours of toil for rather unglamorous conquests (according to current standards, of course...): "Fletschhornhütte" due to the proximity of this summit, which offers its northern ridge from this side, "Studentenhütte", since its construction apparently owes much to volunteer students (?), and finally "Cabane des Pères" in reference to the "Fathers of Bethlehem", or the Augustinians who guard the Hospice du Simplon; all these names for such a small shelter exposed to icy storms! Small masonry construction supported by a terrace, flattened against the rocks forming its backdrop. In foggy weather, it must be quite tricky to identify!
