Following the severe storms that occurred on June 21, 2024, access to the Vénéon valley is complicated, particularly with the ban on all traffic on the road to La Bérarde (RD530) from the Pré Clot hamlet (after the village of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans). Free shuttle services are available upon reservation from Bourg-d'Oisans to the Combe de Pierre Noire between Les Étages and La Bérarde. Access to the La Bérarde hamlet is strictly prohibited, including on foot; alternative hiking routes are provided. Trails in the valley have been affected to varying degrees by these storms. Be aware that usual travel times and elevation gains may no longer apply, and topo guides are therefore not reliable until further notice. From the parking area below La Bérarde, walk along the Vénéon (follow the signposts). Pass the Carrelet hut. After 15 minutes, take a trail on the left that climbs in switchbacks. Elevation gain: 700 m, time: 2H30 / 3h. Note that since June 3, 2025, there is no longer a bridge to cross the Étançons stream. Access to the hut is via the left bank of the Vénéon: cross the stream via the bridge at the campsite downstream from La Bérarde, then join the Carrelet suspension bridge. Public transport access: bus from Grenoble SNCF station, line 3000 + 3040 stop La Bérarde (change in Bourg-d'Oisans), operated by Transière. Timetables at http://www.transisere.fr/. Note: this bus does not run every day.
Winter refuge with 25 beds, no stove, rather cold and damp. Beware of avalanches in winter and spring; the hut is semi-buried as it is exposed to avalanche paths. Built in 1947 and fully renovated in 2017-2018. Payment methods accepted: checks, holiday vouchers, cash. No mobile phone network in the entire Vénéon valley beyond Champhorent when leaving Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans.
