From Valmartin (reached from Valtournenche). Once the Cignana dam is reached, the fork for [->2502] is ignored, continuing along the NO lake, then N towards the Cignana alpine pasture. The trail continues winding WNW, bypasses a promontory (from Mont Rous), reaches the small Plan Supérieur lake and turns N to climb up to Balanselme lake, above which the shelter is located. Approximately 2 hours from the Cignana dam.
This venerable shelter, set up in 1955 when there was no refuge or shelter in the Cignana valley... shows its age! Two bunks with blankets, plus one spot on the floor (not sure if the 3rd mattress is still there), and an overall state betraying its abandonment, now that mountaineers in general and especially the corpulent, tall, or those accompanied by a Saint Bernard... and everyone else may prefer a "normal" refuge, such as the [->2504] a little higher up.
