Access

Swiss coordinates: 629.146 / 089.553 The hut is situated at the foot of Monte Rosa, in a place called « Plattje ». It overlooks the Gorner Glacier, named after the Gornergrat located to its right, the terminus of the Gornergrat railway. In winter: - 5h from Zermatt via the Gornergletscher; - 4h from Furi; - 1h30 from Stockhorn mountain station; - 2h30 from Gornergletscher after descent Schwarztor or from Trockener Steg In summer: - 5h from Zermatt via the Gornergletscher; - 4h from Furi; - 3 - 4h from the Rotenboden station of the Gornergrat railway ATTENTION - IMPORTANT The Monte Rosa hut is a high-mountain hut and not a tourist hiking hut. The ascent to the hut from Rotenboden first follows a well-equipped pedestrian path. Crossing the glacier (blue-white markings) requires adequate equipment (mountain boots, ice axe or trekking poles, crampons, possibly a rope). Access to the glacier and the glacier route often change and can be very tricky. Good physical condition is essential.

Good to know

Guarded from mid-March to mid-May and from mid-June to mid-September (see the online booking calendar) The most visited hut in Switzerland and the most modern. Completely rebuilt at the end of 2009, the hut (if it can still be called that) is a masterpiece of architecture (not my words!) and ecology. Thanks to its south façade covered with photovoltaic solar panels and other thermal sensors, the hut covers 90% of its energy needs. The hut's website provides all information on its history and price list. Visa and Master cards accepted. A winter room with 12 places is available. Emergency radio. Note that the hut is a two to three-minute walk from the Swisscom network coverage.
